Karate Competition Grand Prix #3

Today I attended my Second Karate Competition. This one was at Humber College, which was a tad more easier to get to than the previous one. I found a seat and started watching. The little kids Compete first then the older Groups Compete in the afternoon. Slowly the Competitors from our Club arrived and we sat together in a group before a few of them had to go down to the Floor. It was fun watching the many different Styles.

When one Competes with Kata one does Kata beyond their Level. The Advanced the Kata for the Level the more Points one gets. Many of our Brown Belt Karateka do "Jion" as that is a Black Belt Kata. It has me thinking if I competed what Kata I would do. For me that maybe "Kushanku" or "Naihanchi" and those are Brown Belt Kata and I am at Middle Green Belt.

You pick up things at these Competitions. You watch others do Kata and Techniques and think about your own Techniques and how to improve them. You learn what to do and not do when Sparring.

For instance: Today I saw 1 or 2 Competitors turn away from their opponent in doing a Ushirogeri (Back Kick). I believe it was either my first or second time Sparring that I learned that one. Eyes on your opponent all the time.

One that Sempai Victor told me once Cover your most vulnerable spot...your head/face. You lose the war when you get hit in the face.

I find the Team Kata fascinating. A Group of 3 do Kata together, which is awesome seeing them do these moves in unison. Then they face each other in a triangle and step in Fighting Stance Two would attack simultaneously and the defender defends the attack. I saw a lot of throwing in this "Kumite Kata". They use attacks and defensive moves from the Kata when they do this.

It's interesting watching Kata from other Styles. Some Kata are slightly similar to ours.

I was very impressed by our Competitors today. They did very well. This time we had more Girls from our Club Competing and it was great to see.

Congratulations to:
Devlin, Derick, Amir, Daniel, Samin, Charlotte, Chelsea, Jessica, Patricia, Katrina, and Ava. You all did really well.
